- With Person Centred Counselling the counsellor will provide an environment where the client does not feel under threat or judged.
Human beings have an innate tendency to develop towards their full potential. However, this is inevitably blocked or distorted by our life experiences, in particular those who tell us we are only loved or valued if we behave in certain ways (living up to other peoples expectations) and not others, or have certain feelings and not others. We have a deep need to feel valued, we tend to distort our behaviour in an attempt to become acceptable and to be what other people want us to be.
The counsellor will provide an environment where the client does not feel under threat or judged. This enables the client to experience and accept more of who they are as a person, and reconnect with their own values and sense of self-worth. This reconnection with their inner resources enables them to find their own way to move forward.
Person centred counselling provides the client with the opportunity to have a deep and meaningful relationship based on genuine warmth, regard and acceptance. Through such a relationship the client can gradually begin to explore difficult aspects of their experience which are challenging and difficult for them to deal with. The Person Centred relationship with a client is a unique relationship. The counsellor does not use different tactics or techniques while working with the client. The person centred approach is not challenging or directive and does not require the counsellor to be the ‘expert’. It empowers the client to decide for themselves how they should resolve their particular difficulties. If the counsellor is the ‘expert’ then the client by definition is then less equal than the counsellor and this power imbalance can often be unhelpful.
